My interest in pottery began during family holidays in St.Ives, Cornwall, a historic seaside artist colony. My family is made up of artists and engineers, which reinforced my love for creativity and design. I started my career in science, but swung back to the arts to become a full time studio potter in 2004. I love that pottery allows creative expression and also satisfies my interest in technical challenges like tool making and glaze formulation. My inspiration comes from abstract and traditional forms, usually with simple lines and geometric influences. More recently I’ve been experimenting with slip trailing as raised decoration brings another dimension to my glaze finishes. Rich glazes and overlapping glaze combinations add flow and depth to the surface and provide variation in color and texture. I create pieces with a white stoneware body, firing to cone 6 in oxidation and applying studio-mixed glazes.
