My return to San Antonio five years ago following a 20 year hiatus made a dramatic impact on my work. I began firing in oxidation with an electric kiln to cone 5-6. The pots remain completely functional, but the forms are looser, more organic. The sprayed layers of multiple glazes are inspired by the random and surprising qualities inherent in atmospheric firings, as well as in people and life in general. I’ve come to incorporate and appreciate “flaws” as idiosyncrasies in the process of creation, making each pot, and person, in a series truly unique. This goal is ongoing, and the pottery shows a progression over time that is exciting, compelling, and far from finished. All the pottery I make continues to be safe for food, oven, microwave, and dishwasher. And with proper care should last a lifetime.
