Carly Blankenship with CB Clay received her BFA in ceramics from the University of Iowa. Her career path strayed from ceramics but, after 16 years, she felt a great urge to return to her pottery roots. Now, she’s continuing to find her voice in clay and rediscover the amazing medium. Carly creates functional, hand-thrown items using mid-fire clay. Once her most dreaded part of the process, glazing has now become her favorite and most time-consuming piece of the puzzle. She decorates her pieces by outlining patterns with masking tape. Once the glaze is applied, she peels off the tape to create crisp lines of bare clay, leaving a very satisfying texture and design.
